Local buses are free for children in England throughout August

The national programme covers children aged 5–15 on participating local services, with unlimited journeys and no registration during the month.

    A major methane release in Iraq was repaired and verified by satellite

    UNEP’s public MARS system flagged the release in Baiji and later confirmed that the plume was no longer observed after action was taken.

    ResultUNEP estimates the annual climate impact avoided as equivalent to emissions from roughly 356,000 cars.

    LimitThe estimate covers one site, and the car comparison conveys scale rather than measuring all methane emissions in Iraq.

A 24-hour hotline and 120 trained volunteers covered 40 kilometres of national highway, bringing initial care to road-crash victims.

ResultFirst aid arrived within 5–8 minutes; nearly 80% of patients reached hospital within 30 minutes.

LimitThis is a pilot on two road sections, not yet a national solution or a comparative assessment of clinical outcomes.

The global road-death rate fell 21% between 2011 and 2025

WHO recorded the decline despite more than one billion additional vehicles and sharp growth in new forms of transport.

ResultThe global rate fell 21% over fourteen years.

LimitCrashes still killed 1.16 million people in 2025, and progress remains uneven across countries and social groups.

The United Kingdom ratifies the UN High Seas Treaty

The BBNJ Agreement creates a legal framework to protect biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction, covering nearly two-thirds of the ocean.

ResultRatification enables the UK to participate fully in implementing the agreement that entered into force in January 2026.

LimitRatification alone does not create marine protected areas immediately: proposals, assessments and international decisions must follow.
