WHO validates the elimination of trachoma as a public health problem

Following targeted assessments conducted between 2023 and 2026, WHO validated El Salvador’s milestone against the world’s leading infectious cause of blindness.

ResultIt is the first country in Central America and the second in the Americas to receive this validation.

LimitElimination as a public health problem does not mean zero future cases: continued surveillance and access to eye care remain necessary.

    UNEP’s public MARS system flagged the release in Baiji and later confirmed that the plume was no longer observed after action was taken.

    ResultUNEP estimates the annual climate impact avoided as equivalent to emissions from roughly 356,000 cars.

    LimitThe estimate covers one site, and the car comparison conveys scale rather than measuring all methane emissions in Iraq.

The United Kingdom ratifies the UN High Seas Treaty

The BBNJ Agreement creates a legal framework to protect biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction, covering nearly two-thirds of the ocean.

ResultRatification enables the UK to participate fully in implementing the agreement that entered into force in January 2026.

LimitRatification alone does not create marine protected areas immediately: proposals, assessments and international decisions must follow.

Nepali students design a bilingual school carbon calculator

Twenty-eight youth teams worked on an offline Nepali-and-English tool to measure school energy, transport, water and waste.

ResultThe winning team received NPR 130,000; the beta version will be tested in three schools.

LimitIt remains a prototype in incubation, with no national emissions-reduction outcome yet.
